    Tom..you’ll appreciate this:
We were watching reruns of Gunsmoke the other evening. 1962…and Doc is sitting in Matt’s office lamenting and grousing that the guy he voted for as president just hasn’t kept any of his promises…in fact, he’s a complete fraud and Doc wishes he hadn’t voted for him. Doc continues, “Washington is going crazy spending everybody’s money and the economy is suffering because of it”! Then he rags on Matt for ‘just sitting there, being uninformed and non-involved”. ‘Ol Matt just smiles and tells Doc, “well what would you have me do?” Doc grumps and snaps the newspaper he’s reading, “well just get informed like I am and know the issues”. Matt smiles, looks down and continues reading wanted posters.

We were wondering if Doc the (character) was referencing ‘his’ time zone of 1873 (Gunsmoke’s time period) when Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) was in his second term…or the actor, Milburn Stone/and the writers of the show were referring to current time zone/president, (1962) when Kennedy was president. I’m guessing the former because it is common knowledge that most of Hollywood leans decidedly to the left….although Kennedy, as the first Catholic president did find opposition from both sides regarding the issue of his religion because of fears he would turn the U.S. into a theocracy. We laugh about that now…but I still remember the adults (I was raised Republican) being genuinely concerned.

Solomon had it right. There is nothing new under the sun….As my mother wisely states on many an occasion, “This too, shall pass”.
