Secession

By Tom Quiner

Daniel-Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln

“Lincoln” is coming to a movie theater near you.

The Steven Spielberg biopic of the 16th president looks like it will be a barn burner. I look forward to seeing Daniel Day Lewis portray the legendary 16th president who preserved the union.

There is irony with the timing of this movie. It comes at the same time that a growing number of unhappy Americans sign petitions to secede from the union.

In Lincoln’s day, states seceded from the union because they wanted to preserve something evil and immoral, slavery.

By contrast, today people want to secede to escape the evil and immorality being imposed upon them by the state. These immoralities include abortion, the HHS Mandate, gay marriage, obscene levels of government spending and growing control over our lives.

Abraham Lincoln fought the Democrats of his day to reinstitute the idea of God-given, immutable rights of Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Today, the Democrats are the ones in charge. Again, they are stripping away the immutable rights of Americans. Even more, they are establishing a new code of values, a state religion, so to speak. Let’s call it Secular Humanism.

The country is split right down the middle. Catholics and their conservative Christian brothers and sisters are scared, and they’re angry. They don’t want to be a part of the evil being enshrined as the new order by Barack Obama and his party.

Perhaps that explains this secession talk.

A blog, The Social Reader, reports that 675,000 Americans have signed petitions to secede. Texas alone is creeping up on 100,000 signatures.

Maybe there have always been this many disaffected Americans around. Maybe this secession talk is just a bunch of nutty hotheads.

On the other hand, there is no denying the profound impact that Barack Obama has had on this nation.

Where Abraham Lincoln united the country, Barack Obama has divided us.

Where Abraham Lincoln stood up for those without a voice, the slave, Barack Obama has used his considerable presidential power to deny a voice to the weakest in our society, the preborn.

What a sad irony that the first black president of the United States refuses to stand up for the little guy.

My advice to the secessionists: fight for your country. Don’t give up. America is worth saving. And I’m not talking about violence. I’m talking about the democratic process. And I’m talking about prayer.

Abraham Lincoln didn’t give up. It cost him his life, but he saved a country.

Is the new motto “When the going gets tough, quit”? Or perhaps, “When the going gets tough, throw a temper tantrum”?

I am a long time Republican who is all for small efficient government. It would seem that neither party wants this anymore. People on both sides are all for cutting spending as long as you don’t mess with their cash cows. Our Republican governor was just in Washington asking for continued subsidies for wind energy.

As for abortion, it becomes an issue just before elections every cycle then fades away. You blame Obama for a lot, but what president has really done anything on this issue. Obama and Romney had the same stand on abortion; they are against it except in cases of rape or incest or the mother’s health may be at risk. Until you can convince the majority of people it is wrong, nothing will change.

We can blame Democrats all day, but the bottom line is they ran a better campaign plus we as Republicans have a lot of issues to fix. Perhaps our time would be better served if we try to fix them.

Bobby Jindal said the politically-correct thing. He is partially correct. Romney is not necessarily incorrect, though. I have seen video clips of people acknowledging their vote was based on receiving an “Obama phone.” There is no denying that the essence of Obamanomics is take from the producers and redistribute it to those who did not earn it. The truth lies so where in between.
