The dignity of man

The great movements of our time have been driven by the dignity of man.

Here’s what I mean: dignity is all about being worthy of honor or respect. The civil rights movement, in the words of Martin Luther King, JR, called for white America to judge, not by the color of a person’s skin, but by the content of a person’s character.

In other words, don’t get hung up on looks. Let’s embrace people for their positive actions which defines their character.

By the same token, America judged the negative actions of those who discriminated against persons based on their skin color. Even more, America stigmatized these racists and passed laws to end discrimination.

Dignity is at the root of other great movements. The world was horrified by the Holocaust where one group tried to expunge another because they denied the dignity of the Jews.

Here in America, human beings are dying by the millions via human abortion because one political party denies the dignity of the preborn.

There’s another cause moving at the speed of light: the gay rights movement. It is complex. Who among us doesn’t have family or friends who either fight or embrace same-sex attractions? We want them protected by all the same laws everyone else has.

Here is why it is complex: gay rights advocates demand that we don’t judge actions. Even more, they insist that we embrace their sexual passions as being equal to heterosexual attractions. Even more, they are successfully demanding a redefinition of marriage based, not on the fruit of what occurs in the bedroom, but on the furies of lust released in the bedroom.

And there is yet more: they stage gay “pride” parades around the country which celebrate the gay lifestyle. These parades are characterized by lewdness. It is not unusual to see parade participants with exposed (and sometimes, aroused) genitalia, buttocks, and female breasts.

It is not unusual to see sexual paraphernalia, real or simulated sex acts and general or phallic representations.

In Dallas, TX, law enforcement officials have claimed that they will begin to enforce laws already on the books that prohibit public indecency. In cities across the country, officials often turn a blind eyes to violations of these laws at gay pride events out of fear of political incorrectness.

Could you imagine if pro life women paraded around town with their breasts exposed? Imagine the outcry. And yet how often have you heard of nursing mothers being asked to cover up in public?

The gay community in Dallas is livid. Activist Daniel Cross wrote on his Facebook page:

“The ‘queer’ is effectively being erased from our Pride celebration in favor of the most polished, heteronormative representation of our community as possible. It should be noted that the rioters at the Stonewall Inn fought to break OUT of the damn closet! Our movement was built of sex positivity and our desire to BE WHO WE ARE! I urge you ALL to openly DEFY the Tavern Guild!”

The Tavern Guild is the organizer of the event. They asked the gay community to be respectful of the laws on the books. Some participants (in fairness, not all) are saying, no, they are above the law.

These activists want to act in an undignified and illegal way in public. And yet, they don’t want to be judged by those who disagree with these undignified actions.

For this reason, the gay rights movement has no moral equivalence to the civil rights movement. What two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom is between them.

When they insist on doing it in parades around the country for our kids to see, well, that tells us a lot about this movement, and it has nothing to do with the dignity of man.
