Summer of defiance 2

By Tom Quiner

I went to the Farmers Market yesterday in beautiful downtown Des Moines.

The weather was perfect. The streets were packed.

As usual, I saw some people with clipboards asking the gathered throng to sign a petition. I approached the women and saw that they wore pink badges and t shirts that said: “Summer of Defiance.”

“What are you defying?” I asked.

“We are demanding that Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Legislature restore funding to Planned Parenthood so women have access to reproductive healthcare,” she said.

I looked the young woman in the eyes and innocently responded:

“Didn’t you hear the news? For every one Planned Parenthood clinic in this state, there are 13 other health clinics that offer the same services, except for human abortion. These clinics tend to be closer to Iowa women than Planned Parenthood. By defunding Planned Parenthood, our Governor and legislature are better serving the needs of Iowa women. I certainly wouldn’t want to defy that. Would YOU?”

The young woman looked at me with total incredulity and stammered,

“You mean you don’t support Planned Parenthood? Have a nice day, sir.”

And with that she was gone.

I doubt if my response soaked in to her. But thanks to the Iowa pro life coalition, and thanks to Iowans for Life’s Maggie Dewitte whose informative column on this very topic was published in the Des Moines Register, I was armed with data that exposed the Planned Parenthood lie.

PP is built on one lie after another. That is what we must defy: the culture of death that will say anything to corrupt the innocent.

  1. The left has managed to redefine so many things. PP=health care for women (and nothing else does). I joked once in mid April of being tired of the IRS molesting me, and some woman lost her mind. I joked about going to the fair w/ my clan, and students went nuts for a moment. Now molest and clan have only one meaning, and women can only get care at PP. Oddly, the percentage of women seeking care at PP is very small compared to all the other locations accepting every form of payment that PP does (and sometimes none at all.) People have stopped reading and using our amazing English language to its complete capability…not to mention their own ability to think.
