Provocative question 7

  1. The bomber and shooter we would be correct in assuming they are mentally sick people who kill for whatever absurd reason. The bomber is a totally random event and nothing can prevent these idiots from making bombs in their shed from obtainable products or importing certain materials. Shooters kill people with readily available weapons that outnumber the American population, therefore restricting weapon types and ownership by thorough vetting of individuals is possible and the only logical step in reducing these events, therefore the guns are systematically targeted as being too easy for anybody with any mental sickness or criminal history to obtain. The drunk could be anyone who has a car licence, we all drive, drugs and alcohol are usually taken through someone’s choice to become an idiot and we can ban them from them driving or lock them up.

    • Two gun shops said Paddock passed background checks. According to the New York Times last week: “A vast majority of guns used in 17 recent mass shootings, including guns believed to be used in the Las Vegas shooting, were bought legally and with a federal background check. At least eight gunmen had criminal histories or documented mental health problems that did not prevent them from obtaining their weapons.”

      • There will always be the ones you cannot predict who are not certified insane, never been convicted of crime and have always been responsible people, but if controls such as background checks are not policed, reliable and not rigidly enforced they will fail. In Australia it is difficult to buy and sell firearms, however it is not perfect and some holes exist in the legislation.

  2. If ya ask a liberal, the bomber is retaliating for injustices, the drunk driver has a disease and is the victim of advertising by the alcohol industry, and of course the gun is the cause of the shooting.

    • So who’s tune do YOU dance to? I worry less about criminals and mad men ( they are not the biggest part of the population) than I do the gvt. What would you have a person do when the gvt decides to change law allowing the confiscation of property….it’s been done time and again down through history (THAT and NOT so much hunting was the primary reason for the right to own and keep guns)? Should I use a stern voice and pistol when they show up to take what I worked to have? The founders intended us to have pretty much any weapon the gvt did. That is why there is no specification of weapons we should or should not have…not b/c the founders were to too stupid to see that more damaging weapons would be created. Don’t ever condescend to an educated, independent woman who’s family takes care of itself and uses no gvt service. We home school, hunt for food, are self employed and self pay for the little medical care we RARELY seek. I don’t dance to any tune but the one of the constitution. I trust THAT document FAR more than I trust ANYONE in gvt. today. Generally, we keep it non insulting around here. I take offense at the idea I dance to people’s tunes. I am a thinking person who comes to positions from 50 yrs of varied living all over the country having crossed over several socio-economic boundaries doing so.Tom and i dont agree always, but we neither one view the other as brain washed, just of differing opinion from various learning experiences. Thank you.

      • You worry less about criminals and mad people but worry more about the government. Let me understand, are you saying you believe everybody should be armed to protect themselves from the criminals that you worry less about because the government is more of a threat and you need protection from them or are you meaning their management of the country?

I understand with Trump it is probably a huge threat that certain political ideologies may cause armed uprisings, or even worse the next world war and invasion from communists.

We all dance to at least one government tune whether we like it or not, I did not mean it as an insult and apologise, I guess Aussies are a bit rough around the edges and thick skinned than most. I, like yourself do not trust governments, however the first firearm amnesty here was a voluntary buy back system at the relevant values and the government just ruled out certain types of weapons and bought in new legislation to own the weapons that were legal. Certainly, if you were caught with a banned weapon afterwards you could have been prosecuted.

I also have never relied on government handouts and I am self-employed, I nether consider myself right or left, up or down, but only see what is of most benefit for all of us through statistics and common sense, and I might add, I pay every cent of the taxes that are due, unlike these large corporations that screw us all through tax avoidance.

I am a free-thinking person and that means I am a bonified atheist. I have been through many attempts at being indoctrinated as a child by the church and is an issue of contention, and I too have had varied living and over 60 years of presenting differing opinions and various learning experiences.
