Our hearts are restless

St. AugustineBy Karen Quiner

All of us have an empty spot in us that can only be filled by God. We spend our lives trying to fill it with money, things, food, booze, drugs, sex, power. As soon as we get the things that we think will fill the hole in our hearts, we are left unsatisfied and wanting more. G.K. Chesterton expressed it this way.

“Every man who knocks on the door of a brothel is looking for God.”

St. Augustine expressed it beautifully:

“Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. You were with me, but I was not with you. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace. You have made us for yourself, Oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Peace
