In a single bar, Ennio Morricone has me hooked.
I’m talking about the Academy Award-winning film composer. Ennio Morricone writes music that instantly touches my soul.
You know his music if you’ve ever seen “Once Upon a Time in the West” or “Cinema Paradiso” or “The Mission.”
You know his music if you’ve seen “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” or “The Untouchables” or “Bugsy.”
The list goes on for the 86 year old Morricone. I’ve noticed several things about his music. It is very emotional. His melodies are sublime. He uses interesting instruments and the human voice in ways I’ve never heard before in film scores.
The sentimental love theme from “Cinema Paradiso” puts a lump in my throat every time.
Why talk about Mr. Morricone today? Because he has just premiered a new Mass he composed called “Missa Papae Francisi”. It marks the 200th anniversary of a restored Jesuit order.
Masses have been written by a rather diverse group of composers over the centuries including Beethoven, Bernstein, and even jazz great, Dave Brubeck. I can hardly wait to hear Ennio Morricone’s version.
Get ready for the sublime.
