Pope Francis opens synod affirming traditional marriage
POPE FRANCIS: “This is God’s dream for his beloved creation: to see it fulfilled in the loving union between a man and a woman, rejoicing in their shared journey, fruitful in their mutual gift of self.”
We heard at mass this weekend that it will now be easier than ever to receive an annulment from the church. Have you heard that message too? I understand that some marriages end, but was sad to hear this sounding like a “special offer”. Maybe I interpreted the message incorrectly.
I don’t have the details on this yet, Lori, but I’ve heard pros and cons. Maybe we’ll know more when I see you soon. Thanks for writing.
Nough said.
Yes, it’s not a “special offer.” The greatest impact involves the automatic appeal for non-contested annulments. It will no longer be required. Before, regardless of whether the “decree of nullity” (official wording) was granted or not, the case was sent to another diocese for final disposition. I live in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and I believe my case was sent to the Washington D.C. archdiocese for the mandatory appeal. From what I was told, very few original decisions were ever overturned.
I also believe the bishops were empowered to rule on some unusual cases themselves. Also, the possibility of waiving the fee for processing (dioceses have laity employed as well), is being re-emphasized.
The conveniently overlooked key to this story is that the standards for what constitutes a sacramental marriage are not being diluted. — Tony
