I would appreciate you and your commenters opinion:

Fear of God doesn’t work for most Christians because most believe they are saved just by accepting Jesus (Grace of God). The whole ‘Charles Manson will go to heaven because he accepted Jesus as his personal savior’ argument. Others feel they have that ‘get out of jail free’ card they can redeem at the end. “Forgive me for my sins. I really mean it this time because I could die any day now and I don’t want to burn in Hell for eternity”.

Why doesn’t God just ‘smite’ people right before they do bad things? You still have free will, but if you mess up, “instant judgment” – no one else gets hurt. People would definitely stay on the straight and narrow as people would learn quickly what not to do. There would be no atheists. I would think an all powerful God could pull that off.

The “smite” approach takes away free will.

All our actions have consequences now and we have free will. It doesn’t even really limit free will. The policeman in NC could still have still attacked that man. The consequences of his free will actions would have just been stopped before he could kill someone, which God would clearly know that exact moment in time.

What specifically would hinder your free will?

BTW, God clearly took away the free will of all those who drowned in Noah’s flood.
