The counter cultural significance of birthdays
By Tom Quiner
Are you on Facebook?
For those of you who aren’t into social networking, Facebook notifies you of friends’ birthdays. You’re given the opportunity to write them a birthday message.
The question is: are birthdays overrated?
The answer is … no.
Birthdays call on us to celebrate the greatest gift we ever receive, the gift of our life.
Our life is a gift from God. It is a gift of Love.
Birthdays call on us to celebrate the act of Creation, which in so many ways is counter cultural.
We live in a culture that sneers at life and believes marriage has nothing to do with the act of Creation.
The culture is so wrong.
Birthday celebrations allow us to tell our family and friends that their lives are vitally important, not just to us, but to the world. Facebook is one way to validate the significance of God’s creation made in His image.
How can you impact the culture? By using birthdays as a way to convey the sanctity of life.
