Obama to skip Nancy Reagan’s funeral
By Tom Quiner
Conservatives were outraged that President Obama skipped Antonin Scalia’s funeral.
They are equally outraged that he is skipping Nancy Reagan’s funeral.
Should they be?
I think not.
There is plenty of precedent on both sides of the aisle to skip the funeral of a former First Lady. President George W. Bush skipped Lady Bird Johnson’s funeral. Democratic presidents have skipped funerals of Republican First Ladies before.
On the other hand, presidents have not skipped funerals for sitting Supreme Court justices. President Obama made a clear statement by not attending Judge Scalia’s funeral.
The man who promised to reach across the aisle in his first campaign quickly reneged on that promise. Why should an imperious, lame-duck president who loathes all things conservative put himself out to attend a funeral for anyone, whether it’s a former first lady, Supreme Court Justice, or dog catcher, if they are tainted by conservatism?
Barack Obama is all about himself. I would expect no less of him.
You’re so spot on. What was his motive for attending the service for those precious church members who were gunned down, in the south, and even sang Amazing Grace? Well, we know why. Good post.
Thank-you!
True, we shouldn’t be outraged. We shouldn’t be surprised either. However, his skipping the funeral of a much-loved and respected former First Lady to go to some artsy fartsy hipster festival is just a slap in the face, even if it’s not surprising.
I do understand, but in the scheme of things, this Obama slight is small potatoes.
To be fair, the last 5 or 6 presidents have all had the opportunity to attend a First Lady funeral, and NONE of them have.

Agreed.
