Anti-Catholic bigotry on the rise

By Tom Quiner

I was raised in the Protestant church. I know about Catholic bigotry, because I once had my own misgivings about the Church.

Since I converted to Catholicism, I’ve discovered that most of the, shall we say, “discomfort,” folks have with Catholicism is grounded in ignorance.

So to you, my faithful non-Catholic readers of this humble blog, I’d like you to know something about Catholics: Eucharist means everything to us.

Our catechism calls it the “source and summit of the Christian life.”

We revere it because Christ Himself initiated it at the last supper. Jesus talked about it extensively in the Gospel of John, chapter six and said that Life flows from this mystical communion with our Lord.

Eucharist is sacred. It is beautiful. It is the focal point of the Catholic Mass. Christ is present in the communion, not as a symbol, but in reality, although shielded from our senses.

Eucharist is not a proper subject for irreverent humor. And yet Catholics were again subjected to denigration of their most sacred beliefs from another liberal publication, this time the Huffington Post in a piece written by Larry Doyle. Mr. Doyle characterized Catholic worship services as participating “in a barbaric ritual…a ‘mass’ in which a black-robed cleric casts a spell over some bread and wine…[resulting] in a cannibalistic reverie.”

Catholics have been reviled by the Left for a long time.

Liberal icon, Margaret Sanger, the founder of the organization that became Planned Parenthood, had a simple philosophy: “More Children for the Fit. Less for the Unfit.”

Who was unfit? “Hebrews, Slavs, Catholics, and Negroes.” No wonder Obama is trying to impose birth control on Catholics.

So this anti Catholic bigotry from the Left is nothing new.

The Left’s anti-Catholic bigotry is on the rise, given cover by the president and his frontal attack on religious liberty, the Obama Mandate, which targets Catholic institutions.

Can you imagine the Left attacking any other religion like this? Seriously? Do you think they’d say something like this about the Muslim faith?

The Left is anti-Catholic.

The president and his party are anti-Catholic in their policies.

The media is anti-Catholic.

I’m going to do something about it right now. I’m going to Mass. I’m going to commune with my Christ and pray for them all.

I think you have the right idea, Tom. Your last sentence says it all. And don’t forget, we know how the story ends:-)

You forgot to talk about Mary and the fact that we DON’T worship her. You know that Fundamentalist Baptists are more obsessed with her more than we are. It’s the first thing they talk about when they meet with us….rolls back eyes…

Yes, good point. The Blessed Mother is the final frontier for converts. It took me 25 years before I truly embraced Her. I’m trying to make up for lost time.
