Cardinal George: Our Church will be “despoiled of its institutions”
The clash between Barack Obama and the Catholic Church has been ignited by their respective and conflicting views of what “principle” means. Mr. Obama views principle as a fluid concept that can evolve over time in the name of political expediency. The Catholic Church views principle as a fixed Truth because it flows from Christ, not man. Obama: man determines principle. Catholic Church: God determines principle. You can see the flashpoint …

Will sainthood shake your faith in atheism? Quiner’s Diner has many faithful atheist readers. I appreciate your comments. You keep me on my toes. I hope I make you pause and think once and awhile. A Quiner’s Diner reader, Larry, took issue with a previous post where I suggest that a person wouldn’t die for a lie. My point is that ten of the twelve disciples of Jesus were martyred for spreading Christianity. They wouldn’t have gone to their death for a lie, I suggest. Larry disagrees by questioning the veracity of the eye witness, Paul. Let’s look at his concerns …

God’s surprising gift
Something stood out more than the visiting Cardinal at last Sunday’s Mass. It was a young man in the first row. I watched him singing the opening hymn. He doesn’t sing like you and me. I’m not talking about his voice. I couldn’t even hear him over all the other voices. It was his demeanor, his expression, his joy. He sang as if there was but a single person in the entire Church: Jesus. This young man sang with an unrestrained jubilation for the gift of his life to the giver of that gift, God. His arms waved. His head bobbed. He poured all the love in his heart, which I suspect is a lot, toward heaven. He had to be in the first pew, because he needed quite a bit of space to move around. He just had that much love of life in him that a single pew would probably cramp his style! I couldn’t believe it. And then he turned. I could see the side of his face …
