Surprise: the mainstream media downplays the Chick-fil-A event

By Tom Quiner

The major newspapers downplayed the Chick-fil-A story.

The question is, does a story of this magnitude deserve front page coverage?

Let me put it to you this way:  if these crowds reflected a positive response to gay marriage, do you think the papers would have plastered it on the front page?

Is the Pope Catholic?

Is Obama liberal?

Needless to say, major newspapers like the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times kept the story off of their front pages.

The Des Moines Register ran a large photo on the Metro Section of the Chick-fil-A event, complete with Mr. Quiner wearing his Stand Up for Religious Liberty hat.

Here in Des Moines, the Des Moines Register did not run the story on the front page of the paper. However, they did run it as the lead on the Metro Section along with a large headline (“Thousands turn out to support restaurant”) and two large photos, one of which includes this humble blogger. The Register’s reporter presented the story objectively. I was pleased with the treatment it received.

The local television stations also provided good coverage to the story.

The MSM by and large downplayed the story. Here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter. They no longer control the news. People of faith have online sources to get the news relevant to them.

The results were astounding yesterday, and everybody knows it, despite the MSM’s disinterest in the story.
