“Fly to the Angels”
By Tom Quiner
Today is the feast of the Assumption of the Lord, also known as Ascension Day.
Catholics, Episcopalians, Methodists and many other Christian denominations embrace today, the 40th day following Easter, as the day the Lord ascended into heaven.
This extraordinary event has been portrayed in art down through the ages. I dramatized it in my recent musical, THE FIRE AND THE MERCY, The Pentecost Musical. I chose to focus on an aspect of the event not spoken of in scripture: Jesus’ goodbye to his Mother, Mary.
We don’t know exactly when he said goodbye. Perhaps it was minutes before He ascended. Maybe it was hours or even days. But knowing how close He was to Mary, you know they must have had a tender, and perhaps emotional, conversation before He said goodbye.
Some ascension art includes the Blessed Virgin, such as the accompanying painting by Giotto di Bondone. On the other hand, Mary was no where to be seen during the ascension scene in the recent movie, “Risen.”
I couldn’t resist exploring the wonderful possibilities of this moment. I hope you enjoy it.
Man, EVERYTHING is today. Cinco de mayo, national prayer day, as well as a friend’s birthday…
