The unspoken debate

By Tom Quiner | January 28, 2011

By Tom Quiner Here’s what you couldn’t see at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address by President Obama: carved in the wall above his head as he spoke were these proud words: “In God We Trust.” The President dishonored these words when he said: “We are the first nation to be founded for the sake of an idea — the idea that each of us deserves the chance to…

Should we err on the side of humanity?

By Tom Quiner | January 25, 2011

By Tom Quiner “Pro lifers and pro choicers can agree on this: no one wants to see an innocent human being killed. The issue is, when does human life actually begin? When does someone actually become a human being?” This was my premise in a chat over coffee with my friend, Bob, a staunch pro lifer. My thought was to find common ground, a starting point, between the two warring…

Is preventative healthcare cost-effective?

By Tom Quiner | January 20, 2011

By Tom Quiner According to Rutgers economist, Louise Russell, “prevention usually adds to medical spending.” She’s studied it. She wrote about it in the Journal of Health Affairs in 2009. She says that : Four out of five preventive options “add more to medical costs than they save.” The President doesn’t care about the cost, as he told us last year: “insurance companies [under Obamacare] will be required to cover,…

Do you want Kathleen Sebelius to tell your dentist how to clean your teeth?

By Tom Quiner | January 19, 2011

I just got back from the dentist where I had my teeth cleaned. Section 4102 of Obamacare is charged with setting standards for “tooth-level surveillance.” This is but one of 1968 new powers granted to government bureaucrats. My dentist has done just fine without Obamacare telling him how to do it. Butt out, Mr. President and Ms. Sebelius.

The end of time

What kind of music would a man write who doesn’t know what tomorrow will bring, whether he will live or die?

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?

By Tom Quiner | January 17, 2011

By Tom Quiner [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUn0vvgEvBc&feature=related] Anybody here seen my old friend Martin? Can anybody tell me where he’s gone? He freed a lot of people but it seems the good they die young You know, I just looked around and he’s gone. Didn’t you love the things they stood for Didn’t they try to find the good in you and me And we’ll be free Someday soon and it’s a gonna…

God vs. Science, part 2

By Tom Quiner | January 15, 2011

[The following essay came across my e-mail yesterday. You know the type, it’s been forwarded around the world. I don’t know who wrote it, so I apologize to the unknown author for not giving him or her proper attribution. It is a wonderful discussion of God vs. science.] *** God vs. Science “Let me explain the problem science has with religion.” The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class…

God vs. Science, part 1

By Tom Quiner | January 14, 2011

Can you prove God’s existence? Perhaps the better question is, can you disprove it? The evidence of intelligent design is compelling.

Quiner’s Diner interviewed today on My World, My People

By Tom Quiner | January 13, 2011

By Tom Quiner I had the pleasure of being interviewed today by John Hernandez, host of the podcast TV show called My World, My People. We talked about everything from the Arizona shooting to religion and journalistic bias. We even fit in a discussion about the steroids scandal in baseball.  You can watch the interview here. John got my attention with his first question: “what is the truth.” I hope…

Is journalism dying?

By Tom Quiner | January 12, 2011

By Tom Quiner Do you trust the media? If you’re like me, you’ll probably say: it depends who is doing the reporting. Conservatives like Fox News, whose slogan is: “we report, you decide.” Liberals like Katie Couric who says, “we go beyond the news, we tell you what it means.” Translation: we’re going to slant it. Liberals also love the New York Times. Let’s look at how the Times approached…

Sarah Palin can’t win when it comes to the media

By Tom Quiner | January 12, 2011

By Tom Quiner Sarah Palin was sucked into the tragic Arizona mass murder story by the mainstream media (MSM) the instant the news hit. If you were accused of being somewhat culpable for such a horrific loss of life, would you feel a need to defend yourself? Of course you would. Ms. Palin did just that: “Journalists and pundits … should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to…

Anatomy of mass murder

By Tom Quiner | January 11, 2011

In light of the complexities of the human psyche, it seems that pot-smoking and atheism have at least as much relevance as Sarah Palin when it comes to making snap judgements about the motives of mass-murderers.
