Don’t rush to embrace conspiracy theories

By Tom Quiner | March 2, 2012

Conspiracy theories detract from critical issues at stake in America. Mr. Obama has implemented a bold and destructive plan for America. It is crucial for Republicans to sharpen the message on their vision for America, which they are not doing very well at all. Conspiracy theories will only hurt the conservative movement, not help it.

Pro-lifers make the honest choice

By Tom Quiner | March 1, 2012

The ultrasound debate rages between pro-choice and pro-abortion advocates. And pro lifers are gaining the upper hand in defining terms in the debate. For example, saying, “the woman,” in referring to a pregnant mother is deliberate language used to dehumanize the unborn child alive within her. So if a mother really feels she has a choice, would she choose to end the life of her unborn child?

Ultrasounds are good for women’s “reproductive health”

By Tom Quiner | February 29, 2012

A recent Quiner’s Diner post stirred up a hornet’s nest: “This article is false and misleading. Ultrasounds are sometimes done at Planned Parenthood, if a doctor feels it is necessary, and the patient consents. It is not routine, and it is always a medical, not a political, decision. And that’s the point. Ultrasounds should be performed on a case-by-case basis for medical reasons; they should not be mandated by government at any level for all patients.” A former Planned Parenthood insider spills the beans on what really happens at Planned Parenthood on this critical issue …

Born alive, left to die

By Tom Quiner | February 28, 2012

By Tom Quiner You’re viewing a tragic sight. Right before your very eyes, you’re watching a baby struggle for life. With immediate medical intervention, she might live. Without it, she will be dead shortly. What should you do? This is isn’t a hypothetical question. It happens when abortions take place. Sometimes the abortion “fails” and the baby is born alive. I wrote about just such an occurrence last summer when…

Prelude to nihilism

By Tom Quiner | February 27, 2012

By Tom Quiner You need to get to know Pete Singer. Fast. Mr. Singer is an Australian philosopher with associations with Princeton University in the U.S. and the University of Melbourne in Australia. Mr. Singer is an atheist with a unique philosophy: human life is no more valuable than mosquitos, muskrats, or mackerel, or, for that matter, any other life form on Mother Earth. There is nothing special about man.…

The evolution of principle

By Tom Quiner | February 26, 2012

By Tom Quiner What is a principle? It is an essential truth upon which other truths are based. Former U.S. Senator and Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, embraced a principle that human life begins at conception. He was clear and unequivocal: “It is my deep personal conviction that abortion is wrong. I hope that some day we will see the current outrageously large number of abortions drop…

Ultrasound is standard medical care

By Tom Quiner | February 25, 2012

Performing an ultrasound before an abortion should be a commonsense standard of care for abortion providers. Ultrasound assists an abortion provider in determining gestational age. The farther along in pregnancy a woman is, or the possibility that the pregnancy is ectopic, the greater the risk that abortion poses.

Rush Limbaugh’s take on Newt’s last debate

By Tom Quiner | February 24, 2012

By Tom Quiner Newt Gingrich was strong in last week’s debate. Rush had this to say: “And we talked about it during the 2008 campaign. Nobody wanted to hear it. The hopey-change thing was just too big of a theme. It was absorbing all the energy. But it was shocking, the details of this story. He also — Newt had some absolutely brilliant conservative thoughts on education and on our…

Republicans spring to Catholics’ defense

By Tom Quiner | February 23, 2012

By Tom Quiner President Obama has declared war on Catholics and all people of faith. What else can you call his actions but war? He tried to tell churches who they could and couldn’t hire. His overreach resulted in a lawsuit, Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical School v EEOC, that went all the way to the Supreme Court. The president was able to accomplish something amazing: he united the Supreme Court against him.…

Top 13 religious movies for Lent

By Tom Quiner | February 22, 2012

By Tom Quiner I’m just back from a beautiful Ash Wednesday service. I am always overwhelmed by the realization that I came from dust and will return to dust. I am overwhelmed that God can breathe life into that dust to make me and you. And I am overwhelmed that even after I die, I will enjoy eternal life made possible by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Lent has begun.…

Strong Republican debate tonight

By Tom Quiner | February 22, 2012

By Tom Quiner Tonight’s debate was strong on substance. All four candidates made the Republican case and exposed the weakness of President Obama’s policies. I think every single candidate came across well. Rick Santorum was in the crosshairs and had Mitt Romney and Ron Paul ganging up on him. Mr. Santorum kept his cool. He responded with clarity and intelligence. I was impressed. He knows his stuff. He did something…

Catholic Church doesn’t rely on opinion polls

By Tom Quiner | February 22, 2012

By John Rozycki Regarding Peter Leo’s Feb. 14 essay, “Bishop Pates Misses the Mark on Contraception Rule”: He criticizes Bishop Richard Pates for defending the Catholic Church’s position regarding the contraceptive mandate from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Unfortunately, Leo’s argument is based on his misunderstanding of the mandate’s financing and of the church. With the administration’s recent “compromise,” Leo suggests that the responsibility of financing contraceptive coverage…
